Settlement Permit for Skilled Professionals

Skilled professionals in following categories can also apply for Settlement Permit.

  • People who have completed vocational training (Sect. 18 AufenthG (German Residence Act))
  • People who have completed academic training (Sect. 18 (1) AufenthG (German Residence Act), or EU Blue Card holders)
  • International researchers in accordance with the Directive (EU) 2016/801 (Sect. 18d AufenthG (German Residence Act))

Eligibility to Receive a Settlement Permit

Fees - €113.00. If you are self-employed, the application costs €124.00. Highly qualified professionals are required to pay €147.00 to apply for a settlement permit.

To get the permanent EU Residence Permit/Settllement Permit, you must the following requirements:

  • You have been a holder of a residence permit for at least four years.
  • You are able to cover your costs of living without using public funds.
  • You have paid at least 48 months of mandatory or voluntary contributions to the statutory pension insurance fund.
  • You are employed at a job for which you are qualified or that adequately suits your qualifications.
  • You possess sufficient knowledge of the German language (B1 level according to the Common European Framework of References for Languages (CEFR)) as well as knowledge of the legal and social order and of the German way of life. This can be proved by way of passing the “Life in Germany” test.
  • You have enough living space for yourself and your family members.
  • You have paid compulsory or voluntary contributions to statutory pension insurance.

In some cases following categories of people are also facilitated with Settlement Permit

  • EU Blue Card holders - employed at least for 33 months. With B1 - 22 months
  • People who have completed academic education or vocational training in Germany
    • Residence Permit for at least 2 yewars
    • Employed in a job per qualifications.
    • Statutory Insurance paid for 24 months at least.
    • Language B1
    • Proof of Adequate Living Space
  • Highly qualified professionals - Direct Settlement Permit on Arrival eg.
    • Scientist with special technical knowledge or High level position teacher
    • Proof of Academic Training
    • Ability to provide Adequate living space for 6 months
  • Self-employed persons
    • Residence permit for self employed work per Sect. 21 AufenthG (German Residence Act) for three years,
    • Valid residence permit enabling you to be self-employed.
    • Successfully Self Employed
    • Ability to cover cost of living for Self and Family members.

    For certain residence permits it is not possible to obtain the permanent EU Residence Permit, e. g. those in possession of a residence permit for educational purposes or for certain humanitarian reasons.

Citizenship in Germany by Naturalization

  • Must be living in Germany legally for at least 8 years
  • Indefinite right of Residence - as EU Citizen with freedom of movement, Settlement permit, Limited Residence Permit that can be converted to Settlement Permit.
    • Ineligible Residence permit for Studying
  • Adequately employed and self sufficient at the time of Naturaliztion
  • Sufficient knowledge of German language at the minimum of B1 level (CEFR) German education is also a substitute for the same.
  • Must have passed naturallization test
  • No criminal offense
  • Accept the Basic law
  • Surrender previous nationality. Exceptions: nationals of the EU Member States and of Switzerland are allowed to keep their previous nationality when obtaining German citizenship. Other exceptions exist for states such as Morocco, Iran and Algeria.

Citizenship for children who are born go foreign nationals or who have at least one parent as German are automatically German Citizens at Birth. They are eligible for Dual Citizenship if born to foreigners.and have lived in Germany for at least 8 years, have attended a school in Germany for 6 years, have completed basic education or vocational training in GErmany.
